Ingredients
- 200 g firm tofu, pressed
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tsp honey or maple syrup
- ½ tsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp olive oil or sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, grated
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp sweet paprika or chili flakes
- 1 tsp sesame seeds (to serve)
- 1 tbsp spring onion or coriander, chopped (to serve, optional)
Method
- 1
Press the tofu: wrap it in a clean towel, place something heavy on top and press for at least 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with parchment.
- 2
Coat with cornstarch: cut the tofu into 2–3 cm cubes. Toss gently with the cornstarch until every side is lightly coated — this is what makes it crispy.
- 3
Make the marinade: whisk together the salt, honey, lemon juice, oil, grated garlic, ginger and paprika. Taste and adjust the salt-sweet balance.
- 4
Coat the tofu: add the cornstarch-dusted cubes to the marinade and toss gently until fully coated.
- 5
Bake: spread the tofu on the lined tray with space between each piece. Bake at 200°C for 20–25 minutes, flipping once halfway, until the edges are golden and crisp.
- 6
Serve: scatter over sesame seeds and spring onion or coriander. Serve hot over rice, in a bowl or alongside a salad.
